ROBERT SCHUMANN - TORMENTED COMPOSER

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2f-F_iUsc8&feature=related

The link above is to an orchestral rendition of Robert Shumann's "Träumerei" performed in Vienna last year. My mother taught piano for more than 60 years. In fact, in 2006, I remember her  lying on her death bed at the age of 93 years giving final musical instructions to a favourite young student about musical theory.

During the 1960s I remember students often played Träumerei in the living room of our home under mother's firm and exacting instruction.  It's all just distant memories now; I am the last remaining member of my original family still alive.

Robert Shumann (1810-56) was a leading composer of the Romantic movement. As a young pianist, Shumann damaged his right hand which ended his dreams of becoming a concert pianist. Despite this, his output as a composer for piano, orchestral works and chamber music was immense.

MENTAL ILLNESS

Shumann suffered from depression and mental illness that worsened with age. Robert Shumann experienced auditory hallucinations. During one of his bouts of mental illness he attempted suicide. He admitted himself to an asylum where he died in 1856.  Yet that is not why we remember Robert Schumann: We remember his contributions to the vast treasury of music that makes our lives so much richer.
